WSOC | Santos' Late Goal Gives Gaels First Win

Senior Sophie Santos stepped up late in Thursday's match against Green Bay to help her team secure their first victory of the year.

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's came through late to pick up their first win of the season during their home opener versus Green Bay on Thursday. Senior Sophie Santos scored her first tally of the season to give SMC the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite a severe shot advantage late in the match in favor of Saint Mary's, the score remained tied until the final five minutes of regulation. The Gaels finally broke through in the 86th minute when Jaylen Crim danced down the right sideline and crossed into the box to Santos who tiptoed through two defenders and fired a shot in the left side netting for the game-winner.

Santos' shot was the Gaels 17th and final attempt at the Phoenix net during the match. Saint Mary's has now outshot their opposition 57-25 this year.

Santos and Kamryn Farro led SMC with four shots a piece in the match. Goalkeeper Maleah Milner made one save to pick up her first clean sheet of the season.

The Gaels kept the pressure on GB all game long as they took eight corners and didn't allow a single corner piece. Saint Mary's finished the match with 61 percent of the game's possession.

Saint Mary's nearly took the lead in the 20th minute of play as a well placed corner kick gave the Gaels several looks in the box but the ball was ultimately cleared by a Phoenix defender.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
  • "Green Bay was a hard working and high pressure team and it was good to get a result against them. We had a strong level of possession which was a positive against a team that presses like them."
  • "We moved Sophie to center forward this season because she's skilled in front of the goal. This was a good game for her."
UP NEXT: OREGON STATE
  • Saint Mary's will head north for a quick road trip and Sunday match against Oregon State at 2:30 p.m. Links to the game can be found on the schedule page.
