WSOC | Beavers' Offense Too Much for Gaels on the Road
9/1/2019 5:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Oregon State scored three times against the Gaels in a 3-0 loss in Corvallis.
CORVALLIS, Ore. — Saint Mary's (1-3) had dominated in the shot department through their first three games but were unable to get the offense kickstarted in a Sunday match versus Oregon State (3-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the seventh minute, OSU got a golden scoring chance in the box off a set piece in which Vanessa Gaitan prevented a goal by heading a ball in front of her goal line but Kaillen Fried managed to get a foot on the ensuing rebound to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead.
The Beavers added their second in the 20th minute courtesy of Abby Schwartz and their final in the 79th on a header off a corner kick.
With the seconds winding down in the first half, the Gaels managed to get a ball in the back of the net after a fracas in the box, but the goal was called off due to an offside. Saint Mary's finished the match with five total shots.
Maleah Milner made four saves in goal in her fourth start this year for the Gaels. Senior Sarah Sawatzky subbed in late and played the final nine minutes and change for her team.
AnnaMaria DiGeronimo led SMC with three shots taken in the match in 49 minutes of play. Kamryn Farro and Kyllie Glock recorded the other two shots for the Gaels.

THOUGHTS FROM TRAVIS CLARKE
- "We made two mistakes in the first 20 minutes that cost us. Possession was even but we gave up too many chances and were unable to get anything going in the final third.
- "We are playing well enough to win games but it's the final third of the field where we bog down. We need someone to start finding the net."
- The Gaels return home on Friday for a match against California Baptist at 1:30 p.m. The contest is a doubleheader and will be followed by the men's team taking on Grand Canyon at 4:30. Tickets for the event can be found on the team's schedule page.
