HOW IT HAPPENED
• SET ONE | The Gaels took an early, 5-1 lead thanks to a 4-0 run including two-consecutive service aces from sophomore Breyan Ashley. However, the Bears came back within one point (6-5) before tying the match at 11-all and taking their first lead the following point. SMC came within two points (17-15), but Cal ultimately took the set 25-21.
• SET TWO | The points went back-and-forth to open the second set and the match was all tied up at five points apiece. The Bears looked to find some separation, but the Gaels kept them in check, coming back from down 10-7 to tie the score at 11-11. Saint Mary's took the lead on the following point after a kill from senior Sienna Young. SMC enjoyed a 14-12 advantage, but a 3-0 Bears run gave Cal a 15-14 lead. The Bears went up by two, but the Gaels came back to tie things up at 16. Cal then responded with four unanswered points, taking a 20-16 lead.
