MTEN | Gaels Fight Hard on First Day in Milwaukee

Saint Mary's tandem nearly won their doubles match during the opening round of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

MILWAUKEE — Saint Mary's opened play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic on Friday but unfortunately dropped all three matches the team participated in during the first round.

In the singles Round of 64, Damon Kesaris took on Kentucky's Alexandre LeBlanc while James Watt faced off with Illinois' Siphosothando Montsi.

Kesaris was edged in the first set of his match, 7-6(4) before falling 6-1 in the second set. Watt was defeated in straight sets as well, 6-3, 6-1.

On the doubles courts, Kesaris and Watt went up against Alabama's Kaukovalta / Zhou, the fifth-seed in the 32-pair draw. In a nailbiter tiebreaker match, the Crimson Tide would prevail 9-8.

If the tournament is not affected by rain, both Gaels will play in the consolation round bracket on Saturday. Kesaris is set to take on Luke Smrek from Marquette and Watt will play Martins Rocens out of North Carolina State.
