MSOC | No. 8 Gaels Host Grand Canyon, Head to San Jose This Week

No. 8 Saint Mary's will play the Lopes at home before taking on the Spartans on the road.

MORAGA, Calif. — No. 8 Saint Mary's (2-0) will continue their season this week with two matches including their first away contest of the year. The Gaels will host Grand Canyon at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before taking on San Jose State on the road on Monday at 7 p.m.

Links for live streams, stats, and tickets for both matches can be found on the team's schedule page.

SMC jumped three spots in the national polls this week after handling No. 25 UC Irvine and Omaha last week in Moraga. The Gaels put up six goals in those two games without allowing any and have outshot their opposition 35-14 thus far.

Senior Anders Engebretsen took home a slew of awards after scoring twice and adding an assist in the team's first two contests. Engebretsen was named WCC Player of the Week and selected to Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News Teams of the Week for helping the Gaels win both matches.

Saint Mary's is now undefeated in their last 26 matches which ties them for 12th all-time in NCAA history. The Gaels are also 20-0-5 in their past 25 home games and haven't lost on their home turf since the 2016 season.

ABOUT GRAND CANYON
The Lopes are 1-0 this year with their only match resulting in a 3-0 home victory over Northern Kentucky. Following their Friday contest with the Gaels, GCU will head across the bay to face Santa Clara on Sunday.

Grand Canyon were giant killers last year as they went 5-0 against ranked teams and 12-8-1 on the season overall. The Lopes won the WAC Tournament and advanced to the postseason but were eliminated by UC Irvine in penalty kicks in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

GCU lost three of their top four scorers from last season but haven't had a problem getting opportunities this season as they took 19 shots in their win over NKU. Friday will be the Gaels and Lopes' first ever meeting.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
The Spartans are 0-2 this year after suffering two losses to other Northern California teams. SJSU opened the year with a 2-0 home loss to Sacramento State before falling into overtime to Pacific in Stockton, 2-1.

San Jose State was 8-10-3 and 5-5-1 in Mountain West action last season. The Gaels and Spartans met on Sep. 6 in Moraga last year and Saint Mary's was easily victorious in a lopsided 5-1 decision.

Despite their losses, SJSU has outshot their opponents 30-22 this season and have taken nine corners while allowing just five. The Gaels have a 12-17-2 all-time record against the Spartans.
