THE FIELD
12 other teams will compete alongside the Gaels including the host Arizona, Baylor, Iowa State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Long Beach State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Louisiana-Monroe, UTEP, UTSA, Washington, and Washington State.Â
Of that group, the following teams are ranked among Golfstat's top-50: No. 11 Arizona, No. 12 Baylor, No. 17 Washington, No. 36 New Mexico, and No. 44 Long Beach State. The Gaels rank just outside that crop at No. 62 in the nation.Â
LAST YEAR AT ARIZONA INTERCOLLEGIATE
The Gaels had one of their best performances last season at Sewailo as they finished third in the tough 16-team field.Â
Ethan Farnam had his second consecutive 4-under round to finish in sole possession of fourth place with a 10-under total and round scores of 69-67-67. It was the sophomore's first top-5 finish of his collegiate career. Four birdies on the front-9 helped Farnam lock down a solid round and he ended only one stroke back of Trevor Werbylo (UA) and Riley Elmes (LMU) for second place.
As a team, Saint Mary's shot 21-under during the two-day tournament and placed third out of 16 teams. The Gaels trailed only Arizona (37-under) and No. 11 Arizona State (34-under) on the team leaderboard and finished ahead of their WCC rivals No. 9 BYU and Loyola Marymount, who placed ninth and 11th, respectively.
The Gaels also finished ahead of two more ranked teams: No. 18 Texas A&M (t-4th) and No. 41 UCLA (t-6th).
LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's final tournament of the fall was their own Saint Mary's Invitational held at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach. Saint Mary's finished sixth out of 16 teams and Evan Peterson led the team at 4-under.Â
Peterson was terrific in his first ever tournament as part of the lineup as he ended tied for sixth in the 100-man field. The redshirt senior posted his best score of the event on Wednesday with a 3-under par 68 and eagled his last hole of the day on ninth.Â
Blake Hathcoat and Ethan Farnam had respectable finishes as they both placed in the top-20 at t-16th at 2-under. Ash Hakim was middle of the pack at 9-over and Michael Slesinski rounded out the team's scores. The Gaels overall combined score was 1-over.Â
FARNAM, PETERSON RANKED
Ethan Farnam and Evan Peterson both appear among Golfstat's top-250 golfers with the junior Farnam cracking the top-100 at No. 95 and Peterson not much further behind at No. 137.Â
