MORAGA, Calif. — Rowing head coach Anna Pytlak restocked her coaching staff this week with the hire of Vanessa Tavalero. Tavalero joins the Gaels as an assistant coach, filling the position vacated by Gulliver Scott who recently took the head coaching spot at Portland.
"I'm really excited that Coach Tavalero accepted the position," said Pytlak. "She has coached at a number of top programs and will bring a wealth of championship experience to the team. We already have had some great talks about plans for the team moving forward and I can't wait to get to work with her."
Tavalero spent the last five seasons at Cal, four as associate head coach, and has 19 total years of coaching experience under her belt. Between 2016 to 2018, Cal finished in first or second place at the NCAA Championships and most recently in 2019 helped guide her Varsity 8 team to a Pac-12 Championship.
The University of Washington grad also has previous college coaching experience at Sacramento State, UC Davis, and her alma mater, Washington. Additionally, she has served as a club coach in the past for Capital Crew Rowing Club in Sacramento.
As a student-athlete, Tavalero led the Huskies to a second-place team finish at the NCAA Championships in 2000, also claiming second in the varsity eight grand final. That boat also won the 2000 Pac-10 Championship and was victorious at the Henley Regatta. The conference championship was the third of three straight Pac-10 titles for Tavalero and the Huskies in the varsity eight. During her freshman season, Tavalero also won the Pac-10 championship in the freshman eight. Tavalero's efforts at Washington helped the Huskies garner back-to-back team NCAA Championships in 1997 and 1998, her freshman and sophomore seasons. She is now a member of the UW Hall of Fame.
In addition to her bachelor's degree from UW, she also holds a master's in Sport Management degree from San Francisco.
