LOS GATOS & CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's rowing team split their squad, bringing its 1V8+, 2V8+, 1V4+ and 2V4+ boats to the Triton Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego, while having its 3V8+ boat compete against Santa Clara and SeattleU on the Broncos home water in Los Gatos.
The first race of the weekend featured the 3V8+ boat in Los Gatos, taking to the water against Santa Clara and SeattleU's 2V8+ boats. The Gael boat, made up of coxswain Sophia Cammarosano, Emma Lopez, Fiona Moore, Alaynnah Flores, Corinne McGrath, Lucinda Santos, Ady Beloian, Ashlynn Croarkin and Claire Gonzalez battled valiantly. Made up almost exclusively of underclassmen, the 3V8+ boat just outlasted the Redhawk boat by 1.53 seconds to take home second place.
The Triton Invitational featured three separate races for the Gaels, in which the 1V8+, 2V8+, 1V4+ and 2V4+ boats raced against Gonzaga on Saturday morning, UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon and against San Diego and Portland on Sunday morning. Gonzaga took all four races on Saturday morning, however, the 1V8+ Saint Mary's boat locked in an epic race, falling by just 0.27 seconds to the perennial West Coast Conference favorite Zags. That boat was made up of coxswain Mavis Read Kinney, Carolyn Huckel, Katelyn Robertson, Fiona Samuelson, Maria Moreno Roque, Lia Segrest, Danijela Concion, Chloe Casement and Kelly Nelson.
In the Saturday afternoon races against host UC San Diego, the Gaels took three of four races against the Tritons, and fell in only the 1V4+ race by just 0.12 seconds. It was the first race win of the weekend for the 2V8+ boat of coxswain Rachel Fry, Ava Delucchi, Natalie Davis, Skye Kirsten, Faith Freligh, Isabella MacDonald, Ashley Terry, Gwyn O'Brien and Allison Skoog, as well as the 2V4+ boat, made up of coxswain Alondra Aguirre, Lea Glafkides, Alyssa Terry, Maya Nordberg and Alexa Hernandez.
In the Sunday finale, the Gaels raced against a pair of WCC foes, Portland and San Diego. The Gaels 2V8+ and 2V4+ boats each picked up their second wins of the weekend, while the 1V8+ and 1V4+ each took second, in front of Portland, but behind San Diego.
About the intense weekend of racing, head coach Brian Ebke noted:
"We had this race circled as a big one for us all year. All 4 of our boats did a great job of getting closer to our peak, end of year speed, while also learning and improving each race. We're excited about where we are as a team right now, and pumped to get faster for a super competitive WCCs coming up in 3 weeks!"
As Coach Ebke alluded to, the Gaels will next be in action at the WCC Championships, taking place on May 15 and 16 at Lake Natoma.
