MORAGA, Calif. — Yesterday was a record-breaking day for the Saint Mary's athletics department as Gael supporters and donors helped shatter previous fundraising records as part of the 24-hour 1Day1SMC initiative.
Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics
Mike Matoso thanked donors in a video today saying, "your efforts are going to help us surpass what we are trying to do as an athletics department -- not only maintaining what we have but taking Gael athletics to a new level."
Donors contributed $201,974 which was over twice the amount raised during last year's event. An incredible 2,163 people from 35 different states contributed to the cause marking an exponential increase over the previous high of 537 donors.
"Gael Nation came out in force yesterday," added Senior Associate Athletics Director for Advancement Tom Carroll. "Thank you to our alumni, friends and family members that contributed in record numbers to Gaels athletics. Your support is truly felt by our student-athletes and coaches and these donations will directly impact each and every one of them as they continue to train while looking ahead to competing as soon as they can."
Each Saint Mary's program was well supported during the fundraiser with baseball leading all teams with a whopping 708 donors. Softball (339) and rowing (302) also garnered huge support from their donors. Baseball was awarded a $2,000 bonus while softball earned an extra $1,000 for finishing first and second, respectively.
