MBB | Fotu Earns Double-Double in 96-61 Win Over Spartans

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's had the offense firing on all cylinders Friday night with a 96-61 win over Bay Area foe San Jose State. The Gaels improved to 6-1 with the win and posted their sixth straight victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a complete team effort against the Spartans (1-1) as Saint Mary's had 11 of their 12 healthy players score in the contest. Dan Fotu posted his first career double-double with a 15 point, 10 rebound night on 6-of-9 shooting while Logan Johnson also scored a career-high 15 in his first game back since Nov. 26 against Northern Iowa. Johnson went 7-of-7 from the charity stripe and grabbed five boards in 18 total minutes off the bench.
Adding to the offensive outburst as the other two double-digit scorers were Matthias Tass with 13 points and Leemet Böckler with 11. Tass began the game by making his first six tries and had a team-best four assists.
Tommy Kuhse added nine points in 17 minutes, Kyle Bowen scored nine, and Alex Ducas provided seven more.
Saint Mary's uncorked an 18-2 run early in the game to pull ahead of SJSU, 26-8. The Gaels went 9-of-11 from the field during that stretch with Tass accounting for five of those makes.
SMC's offense was relentless in the first half as they shot 69 percent from the floor and were up 57-27 at halftime. Nine players scored in the opening 20 for Saint Mary's with Fotu and Tass leading the team with 11 points a piece.
Saint Mary's led by more than 30 for most of the second half and as much as 42 after Matt Van Komen made a bucket in the paint to complete a 10-0 run late in the game.
