MBB | Kuhse Scores Career-High 24 in Win over UTEP

MORAGA, Calif. — Tommy Kuhse had a career-high 24 points on Tuesday night as Saint Mary's (5-1) powered past UTEP 73-61 for their fifth straight victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
The redshirt senior Kuhse was the go-to guy for the Gaels as he took a personal-high 18 shot attempts and knocked down 10 of them. He also led the team with five assists and added five rebounds. Kuhse is averaging 13.7 points per game after tonight's contest, tops on the Gaels' roster. 

Matthias Tass aided SMC's offensive efforts with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Alex Ducas totaled 11 more as the team's third double-digit scorer and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. 

Quinn Clinton had eight points and hit two treys to lead the bench's effort while Kyle Bowen also grabbed a team-best seven boards in 23 minutes off the bench. 

UTEP (2-1) came into the game with 57 allowed 3-pointers across their first two games of the season but held the Gaels tight on the perimeter by allowing just 11 shots from beyond the arc. Saint Mary's was able to capitalize on those attempts however by knocking down five of them, good for 46 percent. 

After a back and forth start to the game, the Gaels pulled away on a 14-0 run to lead 25-12 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. Ducas had six of those points with three coming on free throws. 

Saint Mary's led 38-29 at the halftime break after a last second shot by UTEP beat the buzzer. Kuhse had 14 points and three assists at the break while Tass added 10 more points. 

With 12:07 to play, Ducas hit a free throw to put the Gaels up by 10 and after that point, SMC would never lead by fewer than double-digit points for the rest of the game. Neither team had a run longer than six points in the final half. 

Soulay Boom had 21 points to lead the Miners on 7-of-16 shooting. Bryson Williams added 17 more.
