SB | Washington Narrowly Beats Out SMC in Final Day of Classic

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In the final game of the Silicon Valley Classic II, Saint Mary's (7-17) fought until the end against Washington but eventually fell by 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies struck first on Sunday as they put their first run of the contest on the board in the bottom of the first inning following a two-out double to left field that scored a runner from second base. Saint Mary's responded in the top of the third inning as Maddie Gallagher and Kenedi Lopes strung together two back-to-back, two-out singles to drive in Alex Casas who had walked earlier in the inning.

Washington retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth as they began the inning with three consecutive hits to drive in two runs. A leadoff single down the left field line followed by another single and double to center field gave the Huskies the 3-1 edge over SMC.

Saint Mary's began to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth inning as Halle Sullivan drilled a leadoff triple to right field to spark the Gaels' offense. Julia McCormack was then walked before Nikki Alexander hit an RBI single to right field that brought SMC within one run of Washington. It wasn't enough to overcome the Huskies in the end and Saint Mary's fell 3-2 in the end.

Gallagher and Alexander both went 2-for-3 on the day and combined for half of the Gaels' eight total hits in the game. Eryn McCoy, Casas, Lopes and Sullivan each earned a hit on the day to round out the Gaels' hits production against Washington. At the one-spot, Kayla Scott got the start and pitched all six innings for SMC in the contest. Scott allowed seven hits and three earned runs while walking two batters.

UP NEXT: OREGON
The Gaels will return home on Wednesday for a mid-week matchup against the Oregon Ducks. First pitch will take place at 2:00 p.m. from Cottrell Field.
