WSOC | BYU Pulls Away from the Gaels in Road Loss
10/6/2021 9:51:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PROVO, Utah -The Gaels couldn't quite hang with the high-scoring BYU Cougars on Wednesday night in their first road match of the 2021-22 WCC season.
Early in the game the Gaels looked the part of a team that would be in the game until the end. In the 10th minute AnnaMarie DiGeronimo had a long run through the BYU defense and though she wasn't able to keep the ball into the box, Emily Jensen scooped it right up and did get to edge of the penalty box but her pass back to DiGeronimo was broken up.
In the 18th minute Taylour Mendoza got off a quality shot after beautiful juke move to get free in the upper-right corner of the box but the Cougars keeper made the save. The tie would be broken in the 20th minute after a set of perfect pass got Cougars downfield. Cameron Tucker used a spin move to get free of the Gaels defense and put a shot in a tight window inside the near post to make it 1-0 BYU.
A Tucker takeaway in the 31st minute was turned into a goal by the star forward for a 2-0 lead. In the 42nd minute the Cougars showed their speed as Oliva Smith received a well-placed pass from Mikayla Colohan and she lofted a hight shot above Taylor Poland that was tough for any keeper to reach to make it 3-0 BYU.
That would be the score at the half, but the Cougars would tack on four more goals that often started with BYU forcing a turnover. The final BYU goal came with just 26 seconds remaining and it would be the fourth time this season they have scored seven goals in a game.

The Gaels return home to face the University of San Francisco this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
