WBB | Gaels Win in Reno to Open 2021-22 Season
11/11/2021 9:08:00 AM | Women's Basketball
RENO, Nev. - The Saint Mary's Women's Basketball team started the 2021-22 campaign with a 66-61 come-from-behind victory against the University of Nevada after a fourth quarter filled with big stops and big shots for the Gaels.
A combo of former high school teammates at Carondelet High led the Gaels in scoring as Ali Bamberger finished with 18 points and Brianna Simonich had 15 points while going 6 for 6 from the free throw line in the win. Simonich did a little bit of everything in guarding the other team's best player and grabbing rebounds and Bamberger definitely changed the game with her play in the post.
The other big, game-changing performance came from Taycee Wedin as she scored all of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, coming in clutch when the Gaels needed it most. The senior hit two threes in the final frame, including one in transition. She made pull-up jumper that gave the Gaels the lead for good with just over three minutes remaining, along with sinking some critical free throws to seal the game. Tayla Dalton distributed the ball well to help get the Gaels offense in rhythm, especially by feeding Bamberger in the post.
After second quarter run by Nevada put the Gaels down by eight, Saint Mary's steadied the ship in the third quarter and the Wolf Pack only scored six points in the fourth as the Gaels forced them into some difficult shots.

The Gaels remain on the road as they take on UC Davis at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 13.
