SAN DIEGO - The Saint Mary's Women's Soccer Team got goals from three different players and big contributions from
Kimaya Cole on their way to a 3-0 victory in San Diego. The win improves their record to 10-3-4 overall and 4-2-2 in West Coast Conference play for the program's first 10-win season since 2011.
The Gaels got the pressure going early in the game and kept it on after a corner kick in the 17th minute. SMC continued possession in the San Diego defensive end after that corner and on the third shot of that sequence the Gaels would get on the scoreboard.
In the 18th minute
Kimaya Cole fed a cross into the box that was quickly redirected by
Alexis Gutierrez onto the foot of
AnnaMaria DiGeronimo. After a nice pivot move by DiGeronimo she fired a right-footed shot past the diving keeper into the right corner of the net for her fourth goal of the year and a 1-0 Gaels lead.
Cole had a hand in Saint Mary's second goal of the night as well when she sent a ball from left of the penalty box to the top of the penalty area after it got through a partial deflection by a Torero defender. From there
Suzuna Shibukawa gathered the ball and fired a shot straight on from the top of the box that froze the keeper to make it 2-0 Gaels in the 50th minute on her eighth goal of the year.
In the 58th minute Cole helped get the Gaels get out of trouble when a cross was put into the edge of the six-yard box directly in front of the middle of the net. Goalkeeper
Taylor Poland went to punch the cross away but it was headed up into the air and towards the net before she could get to it. As it headed towards the goal mouth, Cole got her right leg up high to keep it out of the net and it would be cleared away out of danger by
Emma Barthel.
In the 66th minute
Malia Allison blasted a long shot that required a leaping save from the keeper to prevent it from being a three-goal lead for Saint Mary's. But in the 84th minute the Gaels would get that third goal when
Emily Jensen scored on a beauty of a shot for her second goal of the season, as she boomed one from the top of the box sending it over the leaping Torero's keeper.
Though SMC outshot San Diego 21 to 5 overall, Poland still had to make three saves to record her eighth shutout of the season.
