WTEN | Gaels Add Madison Weekley for Fall of 2022

MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Women's Tennis Team is excited to announce the signing of Madison Weekley for the fall of 2022. The 5-foot-9 Weekley comes to SMC after a very successful junior career and is the daughter of two Saint Mary's alumni.

"We are so excited to have Madison join the team next fall," Head Women's Tennis Coach Simon Harston said. "We are a tight knit group and her personality is going to fit right in with everybody. She has a longstanding connection to Saint Mary's and that will allow her to hit the ground running next Fall."

Weekley's junior accolades include being ranked in the top 10 nationally in 14s and in the top 30 nationally in 16s. In 2019 she was a Bronze Ball winner in National Doubles, a semifinalist in the Easter Bowl Doubles, and a quarterfinalist in the Easter Bowl Singles.

The Easter Bowl in Palm Springs, Calif. is often called the "Super Bowl of junior tennis" and has featured greats such as Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati in their junior playing days.

"Madison has had an impressive junior career and has demonstrated that she has the ability to play with and beat anyone in the nation," Harston added. "We truly believe, though, that the best is yet to come from her and we can't wait to get started."

Weekley has been very successful in the classroom as well, making the High Academic Honor Roll all through high school at the California Connections Academy and plans to study business at Saint Mary's.

"Saint Mary's offered everything I was looking for in a college," Weekley added. "I chose it for the great academic reputation, the competitive tennis program and coaches, and I wanted to stay in California."

Her parents, Jason and Cynthia Weekley, both attended Saint Mary's and her father Jason played for the Saint Mary's Baseball Team. He led the Gaels in batting average in 1995 after hitting .347 that season. He also led the team in triples in 1996 and in hits, doubles, and RBI in '95 and '96 before drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit well in their minor league system as well, so a good swing certainly seems to run in the family.

"I started playing tennis at the age of five because I saw people playing tennis on my way to school every day and it looked fun," Weekley said. "I played soccer competitively as well but I eventually chose to commit to tennis."

The Gaels resume action January 14-16 at the Cal Winter Invite in Berkeley, Calif. and will begin the head-to-head portion of their 2021-22 schedule at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, January 22.
