MORAGA, Calif. — She blazed a path through Johnson-Springview Park on Saturday and now she is getting recognized by Saint Mary's Athletics. Announced this morning, Rayna Stanziano of Gaels Cross Country has been named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week after her stellar first-place performance at the Jessup Invitational last week.
Stanziano is no stranger to success. The sophomore out of Concord was a top-finisher during nearly every race during her freshman season and she picked up right where she left off. She was able to get past former NAIA-cross country star Bailey Cossentine by 17 seconds en route to an 18:21.7, her fasted 5k time at the collegiate level. Not only did the mark earn her first place and an individual title, but she also set the course record at Johnson-Springview Park.
This marks the second time in her career that she has been named the SMC Athletics Student-Athlete of the week. Her first honor came after the first race of freshman campaign, the USF Invite on August 31, when she finished 9th overall in the competitive field. She was also the Co-Student-Athlete of the Week on January 21, 2020 when she qualified for the Pan Am Cross Country Championships, making her the first Gael to do so.
