WSOC | Gaels Pick Up First Win of Season Versus San Diego

MORAGA, Calif. — Theresa Romagnolo picked up her first win as head coach of the Gaels on Saturday as her team utilized two quick first half goals to best San Diego 2-1 inside Saint Mary's Stadium.

The Gaels improved to 1-3-2 (1-2 WCC) with the win while USD fell to 1-4 (1-2 WCC).

Taylour Mendoza got the scoring started for the Gaels in just the seventh minute of play. After San Diego turned the ball over deep in their half, SMC kept the pressure on and ultimately allowed Mendoza to fire off a low, rolling shot from just inside the penalty box. As the ball approached the six, a passing Emily Jensen screened the Toreros' keeper and allowed the ball to sneak into the back of the net for the early 1-0 lead.

Just 22 minutes later, the Gaels doubled their lead shortly after a set piece deep in USD territory. After the initial free kick was partially cleared, AnnaMaria DiGeronimo sent a perfect cross into the box where Laura Trapero Sanz connected on a mid-air volley for the pretty goal.

Saint Mary's could've extended their lead even further early in the game as DiGeronimo took a shot in the 12th minute that was tipped by the USD goalkeeper Sarah Young, hit off the crossbar, and then came straight down and almost crossed the goal line. The Gaels got a lucky break less than two minutes later as San Diego hit the crossbar on the other side of the pitch.

USD answered back with a goal in the 53rd minute but the Gaels' defense held steady for the remainder of the match to seal the win. Freshman Taylor Poland made three saves, all in the second half, to get her first win of the season in goal for SMC.

The Gaels outshot the Toreros 14-11 in the match and half of their attempts came on goal. DiGeronmino led the team with five shots while Mendoza had four. SMC also had four corners compared to three by USD.

The match took over two and a half hours to complete due to two serious injury delays during the game for San Diego. Both stoppages occurred in the final half with the second stoppage taking approximately 30 minutes from start to finish.
