SAN MATEO, Calif. — Saint Mary's Volleyball is one of the hottest teams in the WCC, having won five of their last six matches. That has earned them some recognition from the WCC for the first time in a long time. Just announced by the conference office, Jennifer "Boo" Laird has been named the UCU WCC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending on March 14.
The Gaels were strong on the block all week long, and Laird was right in the middle of it for Saint Mary's. The senior middle blocker recorded a total of 18 blocks on the week, with one solo and 17 assisted, as the Gaels won two out of three over the week. Laird put up a solo block and nine assisted blocks on Tuesday in three sets against Pacific, recording a top-five blocking mark in the WCC this season, while setting a career-best. The San Luis Obispo native also added 15 kills and 11 digs on the week, with one ace from the line in her strongest week at the net this year.
The award going to Saint Mary's is historic. Gaels Volleyball has not received a weekly or monthly player award from the WCC since Jordan Shaw was named the WCC's Player of the Month for November of 2013. This mark's Laird's first weekly award from the conference office. Laird shares weekly honors this week with Rachel Ahrens of Pepperdine who takes the weekly Player of the Week award.
Saint Mary's has two more WCC matches on tap this week, as the Gaels split a home and home with Santa Clara. The Broncos are in town on Thursday night at 6:00 pm inside University Credit Union Pavilion before both teams head to Santa Clara on Friday night.
