VB | Gaels Set for Clashes with Pair of WCC Top Dogs, Take on Oregon State and San Diego
11/5/2025 9:41:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
MORAGA, Calif. — Riding a six game win streak, their longest since 2023, the Gaels will now have a chance to keep their momentum rolling against two of the top three teams in the West Coast Conference, as they will play host to Oregon State on Thursday evening, before heading south to San Diego to take on the conference front running Toreros. This will be the second time that the Gaels see both the Beavers and Toreros, who they both saw in the first two weeks of the conference season. That said, the Gaels have taken major positive strides in growth since their last meetings, and look to pull off a pair of wins, which could propel them as high as third in the WCC standings.
A CHANCE FOR SEVEN
The Gaels have now won six matches in a row for the first time since 2023, when they accomplished this feat twice, once in non-conference play and once in conference play. The last time they won seven consecutive was in 2018, when they actually won eight straight in their last NCAA Tournament berth season. When it comes to conference play, the Gaels have not won seven WCC contests in a row since 2009, when they won 10 straight.
COACHES CORNER
ABOUT THE BEAVERS
After starting conference play at 6-1, the Beavers of Oregon State have come back to earth winning just two of their next four to settle into third place in the West Coast Conference. Head Coach Lindsey Behonick needs just one more win to log her first winning season at the helm of the Oregon State program, but with the way the season started, she and her team have their sites set on a bigger goal, getting back into contention for a WCC title. Helping lead that effort is senior outside hitter Lauren Rumel, who ranks top three in the conference in attacks per set, kills per set, points per set, and total kills. Led by Rumel, the Beavs rank first in the WCC in team kills per set at 13.48. The Gaels and Beavers met up in Corvallis for the WCC opener this year, with Oregon State taking a 3-1 victory. As expected, Lauren Rumel led the charge with 14 kills, while freshman middle blocker Alana Marrs went for eight kills and eight blocks, and setter Emma Lilo logged a 24 assist, 14 dig double-double. It was Oregon State's sixth victory over the Gaels in seven tries. They will now make just their second ever trip to Moraga, where they are 1-0 all-time vs the Gaels.
ABOUT THE TOREROS
Dating back to last season, the San Diego Toreros have won 13 consecutive West Coast Conference matches. Sitting at 11-0 in WCC play this year, the Toreros have a chance to run the table in conference play, something they did back in 2022 en route to a trip to the National Semifinals. If USD pulls this off, it would be the third time under Coach Jennifer Petrie's storied 25 years at the helm that she has led her team to a perfect conference season. There are plenty of names to know from this San Diego roster, most notably, Nemo Beach, Olivia Bennett and Kylie Munday, who lead the WCC in kills per set, digs per set and assists per set respectively. In their meeting back in early October in Moraga, it was Beach who led the Toreros to victory, with 14 kills and three aces in the 3-0 win. The Toreros have won 13 straight against the Gaels, with both of Saint Mary's last home and road wins over USD coming in 2018.
