VB | Gaels Enjoy First Visit to Seattle with Four Set Win, Match Last Season's WCC Win Total
11/1/2025 9:33:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SEATTLE — Nine days ago, the Saint Mary's Gaels (8-13, 6-4 WCC) needed five sets to defeat the Seattle U Redhawks (6-15, 0-10 WCC). Today, in Seattle, they only needed four, as the Gaels first visit to the Emerald City was a successful one. With today's win, the Gaels have now matched their conference wins total from last season, with their sixth.
These two squads played an extremely tight contest in Moraga last week, and the match started that way in Seattle, with the two teams matching each other point for point through the first 10. A 6-2 run for Saint Mary's, featuring three Miley Thunstrom kills, would give the Gaels the lead at 11-7, a lead they would not relinquish throughout the set, taking it 25-18. Thunstrom, Mya Allen and Genevieve Bane all tallied three kills in the set, while combining for just one error. All told, the Gaels hit an astonishing 0.414 in a statement set one victory.
An ace from Ivona Lazovic and a Genevieve Bane kill would put the Gaels ahead 2-0 in set one, and they would not relinquish that lead, riding it all the way to a 25-16 set win and 2-0 lead in the match. Mya Allen added four more kills in the set, while Ivona Lazovic was nearly perfect in the frame with seven assists and five digs.
Coming out of the prolonged break between sets two and three, Seattle U built a 12-9 lead, then expanded it out to 20-16. The Gaels battled all the way back with a 5-1 run to knot things up at 21 all, but ran out of gas just shy of the finish line, as the Redhawks forced a fourth with a 25-23 narrow set three win. Just like in set one, the Gaels had Mya Allen, Genevieve Bane and Miley Thunstrom each tally three kills in the set, but the block got it going late in the third, with three of the four in the set belonging to Anaya Thrower.
Just like in set one, set four began with a 5-5 stalemate. A Gracie Vohs kill would give the Gaels a 6-5 lead to spark a 5-2 run for the Gaels. They would not trail for the remainder of the match. The Redhawks got within four at 19-15, but the Gaels would close out the match on a 6-0 run, punctuated with an exclamation point block by the duo of Vohs and Tessa Schoutem. The Gaels rode their freshman phenom to the set four win, as Mya Allen finished off the match with a five kill set to salt away the victory.
Mya Allen made it six straight games with at least 15 kills, tallying 15 to lead Saint Mary's today. Allen also added three aces, making her responsible for a team-high 18 points today. Genevieve Bane chipped in 11 kills, while Miley Thunstrom added eight. Ivona Lazovic picked up her third double-double in the last five matches with 20 assists and 12 digs, while Madi Zorn finished just behind her with 18 helpers. Tessa Schouten joined Allen with three aces, while Alayna Pearson matched Lazovic with 12 digs. At the net, Bane and Anaya Thrower finished tied for the team lead with five blocks each, as the Gaels reached double digits for the fifth time in the last six matches, tallying 11 on the evening. As a team, the Gaels hit at a season-best 0.315 clip, while also recording double-digit aces for the first time since opening weekend.
PRECISE AND ACCURATE ON THE SWING
Saint Mary's hit at 0.315 for the match, their highest mark this season. Four players recorded at least one kill with hitting percentages over 0.400. On just one attempt, Madi Zorn picked up a dump kill to hit at 1.000. Tessa Schouten took eight swings from the middle connecting for five kills and just one error for a 0.500 clip, while Anaya Thrower swung just seven times but connected for three kills and no errors for a 0.429 hitting percentage. Rounding out the group was Miley Thunstrom, who had the highest volume, with 17 swings, tallying eight total kills and just one error to finish her day hitting at 0.412.
A STRONG SERVING DAY
The Gaels not only reached double digit service aces for the first time since opening week, but also registered just eight service errors. The +2 ace over error advantage was the best clip the Gaels have had all season. Tessa Schouten and Mya Allen each totalled three aces to lead the charge, while Ivona Lazovic added two, and Madi Zorn and Miley Thunstrom each tallied one. Allen and Lazovic also went errorless from the service line, as did Abby Castillon, who came onto serve twice in set four.
