MORAGA, Calif. — It's not easy to stymie one of the top offenses in the NCAA, but some pitchers just make it look easy. That was the case on Saturday afternoon for Sam Bower, who helped Saint Mary's Baseball score their first WCC win of the season against the dangerous San Diego Toreros. While earning his third win of the season, he pitched well enough to be named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week.
Bower was fantastic again for Saint Mary's as they took down the hot-hitting USD Toreros on Saturday afternoon. After San Diego put up 15 hits on Friday, Bower limited the Toreros to just five hits across seven innings of work, walking just one and striking out five. While allowing three runs, all three of those runs were the product of two SMC errors, and thus unearned runs. This marked just the second time all season the Toreros offense had been held to five runs or fewer in a single game. He faced the minimum through the first three innings. Bower lowered his ERA to a sterling 1.05 and still has allowed just two walks in 34.1 innings this season.
This marks the first time Bower has been named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week. The last Gaels baseball player to do so was Kevin Milam on May 20, 2019 when the Gaels concluded their last season of WCC play.
Saint Mary's hits the road for their first road WCC series of the season this weekend, taking on the Pepperdine Waves. The three-game series begins on Friday at 3:00 pm, and continues with afternoon starts on Saturday and Sunday. Bower will make his appearance on Saturday, pitching in game two of the series against the preseason favorites to win the conference.
