ROW | Gaels Take First in Three of Four Races with Santa Clara

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. — The 2021 spring rowing season officially began on Saturday with Saint Mary's and Santa Clara competing in a series of five-minute races, and one three-minute race. During the four exhibitions, the Gaels put a total of three boats in the water and wound up taking first place in three of the four races, a great first showing after going over one year without competing due to COVID-19.
The Gaels A team wound up winning all three of the races that Saint Mary's finished in first at, and those were the five-minute races that began the morning on the water. As these races were aimed at time, the winners were determined by distance traveled, as opposed to the time it took to travel across a certain distance. In three five-minute races, the Gaels A team traveled 1170, 1370, and 1117 meters, respectively, securing the victories. The Gaels B team scored second place finishes in the first and second five-minute races, while the A team took second in the three-minute race with 849 meters, finishing just one meter behind Santa Clara's boat for the win.
This tune-up will serve as a great measuring stick for the Gaels before they head up to Washington next weekend to participate in the Portland Invite, taking place in Vancouver. The Gaels will have four races before the WCC Championships on May 15.
