GOLF | Ashbrook Places Top-10 at Cougar Classic

PROVO, Utah — Saint Mary's held their position during the final round of play at the PING Cougar Classic to finish seventh out of 20 teams. The Gaels shot 283 on Saturday which was seven strokes better than their previous round.
THE LEADERBOARD
SMC's 5-under performance in the last round resulted in a 12-under overall score. The Gaels finished one stroke ahead of both Wyoming and Denver and five back of No. 50 Utah who came in sixth. No. 28 San Francisco won the tournament by 13 strokes at 41-under.
Ethan Ashbrook shot 2-under on Saturday to conclude the tourney tied for seventh at 8-under, his best result so far this season. A total of 104 competitors played in the event. Ashbrook had the lineup's two best scores in the first two rounds and his performance on the final day was second best on the team.
Ethan Farnam posted SMC's lowest score of the day at 3-under. The senior lowered his overall total to 2-under to place t-32nd. Evan Peterson had another solid round at 1-under to grab a top-20 finish.
Rounding out the team's lineup was Blake Hathcoat who concluded the event 4-over followed by Michael Slesinski at 6-over. Dylan VanderVeer, who was competing as an individual, wrapped up the tournament at even to tie for 42nd.
BYU's Carson Wendell and USF's Tim Widing shared medalist honors at 13-under. The full results of the tournament can be seen here.
Saint Mary's had to play out the last few holes of the second round early in the morning as darkness cut yesterday's round short.

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS
- Both Hathcoat (10th) and Slesinski (2nd) had eagles on par 4's on Saturday.
- Farnam recorded four birdies and just one bogey in the final round.
- Four Gaels shot 2-under on the front 9.
- Ashbrook began his round with back-to-back birds on holes 6 and 7.
- Five Gaels scored a 4 on the 557 yard par 5 13th.
- Hathcoat tied for first in the tournament with a 2-under total on par 3's.
- The Gaels will now play in their final tournament before the postseason as they head to Henderson, Nevada for the West Coast Conference Championship. The three-day competition will be held at Reflection Bay Golf Course beginning Thursday.
