WSOC | Gaels, No. 17 Cougars Draw in Moraga

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (2-4-3, 2-3-2 WCC) hung tight with the No. 17 BYU Cougars on Saturday and earned a 1-1 draw after the teams went to double overtime.

The Gaels' defense stood tall against BYU (9-3-1, 5-1-1 WCC) who came into the match having scored 25 goals across their last five matches. The teams were scoreless at halftime and SMC trailed the Cougar's high-powered offense by just one shot at the break, 6-5.

It was the Gaels who would end up with the first goal of the match as Maya Alcantara came flying into the penalty box to volley a corner kick from Taylour Mendoza and send her shot high left into the back of the net. The 80th minute goal was the second in as many games for Alcantara.

The Cougars managed to get one back just over five minutes later however as Cameron Tucker cashed in on a cross to the right side in the 86th minute to tie the score once again. SMC was only four minutes and change from becoming the first team to blank BYU this season.

Saint Mary's withstood an overtime charge by the Cougars to hang on for the draw. BYU took six shots between the two overtime sessions with Gaels' goalkeeper Taylor Poland making three saves on those shots.

Poland would make seven total saves in the match against 18 BYU shots. Saint Mary's took nine shots of their own in the contest with Isabella Santavicca leading the team with three.

The Gaels allowing only one goal to the Cougars was no small feat. BYU has scored only once in a match on two other occasions this season which were in losses to No. 3 UCLA and No. 23 Santa Clara.

UP NEXT: PORTLAND
Saint Mary's will play their final road match of the season next Saturday against the Pilots in Portland. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
