VANCOUVER, Wash. — Making the trek up to Vancouver, Washington, Saint Mary's Women's Rowing took part in the 2021 WCC Championship at Vancouver Lake. Saturday marked the first time since 2019 the conference held a championship event, following the COVID-19 pandemic, so it had been two years since the Gaels had competed for a title. Saint Mary's secured a fifth-place finish overall in this year's event, while landing a pair on the All-WCC team afterwards.
The Gaels put three boats on the water up in Vancouver, with one varsity four lineup and two varsity eights. SMC was able to pick up a win over Santa Clara in the first varsity eight race, where they finished above Santa Clara for the third time this year. The Gaels, led by Lina Rak as the coxswain, were able to finish in 7:03.20, less than five seconds behind Portland for fifth place in the race. The Gaels also came in fifth place in the second varsity eight race, where their time was 7:13.41. The four-Gael crew that rowed in the varsity four race ended with a time of 8:58.55.
Following the races, Saint Mary's landed a pair on the annual All-WCC team, with Emily Sprigings and Emma Scanlan picking up the honors. For Sprigings, this comes on the heels of her being named to the preseason All-WCC team in February, and is the second time in her career that she has been named to the All-WCC team. Scanlan received All-WCC honors for the first time in her career after being left off the preseason list.
"Although we didn't have the results we were aiming for, this team has had a great spring," head coach Anna Pytlak said following the WCC Championship. "It is a huge accomplishment to field a full team and compete this year, and I'm excited to build on the success we had. A big part of that momentum is attributed to our leadership group: Emily Sprigings, Katie Boselli, Emily Ferbet, Emma Scanlan, Olivia Watson, and Hathaway Scarpine. And special congratulations to Emily Sprigings and Emma Scanlan on being selected to the All-WCC team. They are a great stern pair and it is a well-deserved honor."
Gonzaga won the 2021 WCC Championship for the sixth-consecutive year, and took home a chunk of the awards as well, including Newcomer of the Year, a split of the Coxswain of the Year award, and the Coach of the Year award. Kadee Sylla of San Diego was able to avoid a perfect sweep for the Zags by earning the Rower of the Year award.
