MORAGA, Calif. — For the first time since the 2014 season, the Saint Mary's Women's Soccer team is off to a 2-0 start. The Gaels have scored five goals in the first two matches of the season, an improvement over an offense that scored just 11 goals across 11 matches last year. LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels began their season with a home match against Sacramento State and lit up the scoreboard to the tune of a 3-0 win over the Hornets.
Malia Allison,
Kyllie Glock, and
Alexis Gutierrez all found the back of the net in the victory, while
Taylor Poland recorded her first clean sheet of the season. Saint Mary's backed that up with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in their first road game of the year, at Cal Poly, on Sunday afternoon. Down 1-0 midway through the second-half, the Gaels turned to
Suzuna Shibukawa to get the offense rolling, scoring twice in the second half. Her game-winner came with under four minutes remaining, giving the Gaels a 2-1 win for a 2-0 start to the year.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE
The Aztecs began their season at home, splitting their first two matches against Army West Point (1-0 win) and Pepperdine (3-0 loss). The only goal that San Diego State scored in their season-opening win was from Laura Fuentes on a penalty kick in the 58
th minute. Seven starters on this year's team return from last season's 8-3 squad that finished first in the regular season in the Mountain West Conference West Division, but they were picked second in the preseason poll by the coaches. One interesting tidbit about the Aztecs: they are 0-4 lifetime inside Saint Mary's Stadium, but 3-0 when hosting the Gaels.
Â
ABOUT CAL
The Golden Bears are off to a 1-0-1 start after their first two matches, with the highlight coming in the one draw they recorded. After beating UC San Diego 3-0 in the opener, Cal forced a 1-1 draw against the defending national champions, Santa Clara. Kelsey Turnbow scored for the Broncos while the Golden Bears got a goal from Abby Borchers in the 36
th minute, which would stand as the last score of the game. They weathered 18 shots from the champs but held them scoreless in the final 100 minutes of the match. The Golden Bears will play Portland on the road on Friday afternoon before hosting the Gaels, part of four-straight WCC matchups for Cal.
