BREMERTON, Wash. - Michael Slesinski led all golfers with two eagles at the Husky Invitational and finished second overall among 80 golfers in the individual portion of the tournament. Slesinski shot a tournament-best 66 in the second round to go along with a 70 in round one and a 72 in round three to finish 8-under par overall. He had an opportunity to tie for first on the final put but it slipped just past the cup.
"The Husky Invitational was a good start to our 2021-22 season," Head Coach Scott Hardy commented. "Having Mikey step up and carry us to some quality wins with his awesome second-place finish in a strong field of 80 players was a huge boost."
Mitchell Hoey improved his score in each round going from a 75, to a 73, to a 72 to finish with a 220 overall, tied with teammate Kristian Bressum, who made a birdie as well, for the next Gaels up on the team leaderboard. Dylan VanderVeer and Ethan Farnam were directly behind them with a score of 221 overall.
Slesinski and VanderVeer each made 11 birdies in the tournament and Farnam had 10. Hoey led the team making par 35 times and Slesinki was right behind him with 34. The Gaels finished 3-under par on the team side of the invitational, good for seventh of 16 teams.
"Obviously we would have liked to have shot a few shots lower each round to get further into contention, but securing wins over quality programs like Missouri and San Diego State is a good starting point," Coach Hardy added. "We had two freshman in their first college tournament and they both contributed. Overall this was a positive first tournament in a long, 12-tournament schedule."
UP NEXT: WOLF PACK CLASSIC
The Gaels will get a little time off before resuming that 12-tournament schedule in Reno, Nev. on October 11 and 12 for the Wolf Pack Classic hosted by the University of Nevada.
