WBB | No. 18 BYU Tops Gaels in Utah

PROVO, Utah – The Saint Mary's Women's Basketball Team struggled out of the gate against No. 18 BYU in a 78 -36 loss on the road. The Gaels are now 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in WCC play.

TOUGH START
The Gaels committed three turnovers on their first three possessions on the way to nine turnovers in the first quarter. The Cougars would finish the first on a 14-0 run in last six-plus minutes, as the Gaels made just two field goals in the opening frame.

Saint Mary's has shot the ball well overall and won the rebounding battle most nights so far this season, but had trouble with both on Thursday night. The Gaels shot just 28% from the field in the game compared to 40% on the season and 18% from three-point range, though they've shot 31% from downtown on the year. The Cougars out rebounded the Gaels 57-34 on the night and won the turnover battle by 15.

THE BRIGHT SPOTS
The Gaels came out of the gate to start the second half much better than they did in the first and played their best basketball in the third quarter. They started the half on a 9-2 run that led to a timeout by the Cougars. They shot 47% in the third, and were within two in rebounds and two turnovers in a quarter BYU won just 23-19 before the benches came in to play the fourth.

Ali Bamberger got going in the third, scoring 12 of her 14 points as the Gaels tried to hit the reset button and execute their game plan to start the half. She went 5 of 6 from the field including a three pointer in the quarter.

Taycee Wedin is one three pointer closer to the program record, needing just seven to tie Jontelle Smith who made 268 three pointers for the Gaels from 2005-2010. Wedin also tied her season high in rebounds with five on the night.
