FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. MASHA MASHES
Mariia Kozyreva started 2022 in stellar fashion, winning the singles title at the Cal Invite in the Gaels first competition of the new year. Kozyreva has already enjoyed a breakout fifth year, in which she has advanced to the ITA National Fall Championship Quarterfinals, the ITA Division-I Northwest Regional Semifinals, and defeated the No. 1 seed at the KPSF Open in San Francisco, Sai-Sai Zheng from China, who was ranked No. 75 in the world at the time.
2. BAMBERGER IN BUNCHES
Consistency has been the name of the game for Ali Bamberger in the post this season. The leading scorer for Saint Mary's Women's Basketball, Bamberger has scored at least 10 points in all but one of the 14 games this season. The Walnut Creek native has scored at least 12 or more points in eight-straight games, including her last three games in which she hasn't played more than 25 minutes.
3. ARIZONA OPENER
Saint Mary's Golf returns to the links for their first tournament of the spring season as they will travel to Tucson, Ariz. to take part in the Arizona Intercollegiate on January 24-25, hosted by the Arizona Wildcats. Two freshmen made immediate impacts for the Gaels in the fall, with Mitchell Hoey coming in second at the SMC Invitational and Kristian Bressum just one stroke out of first at the Visit Stockton Invitational. Grad student Michael Slesinski finished second at the Husky invitational and was named the WCC Golfer of the Month for September.
4. HISTORIC AT HOME
After beating Santa Clara at home on Thursday night, Saint Mary's Men's Basketball is actively in the middle of the eighth-longest home winning streak in Saint Mary's history. The Gaels have won 12-straight in a row at home, and have not lost inside University Credit Union Pavilion since January 16, 2021. Only four other winning streaks in Gaels history have lasted longer than one calendar year.
5. NOTHING BUT NET
Saint Mary's Men's Basketball continues to climb in the NET rankings after opening conference play with a 2-1 record. After 18 games, the Gaels rank No. 35 in the NET Rankings, with all four of their losses coming in Quad 1 games. The West Coast Conference has done well in the NET Rankings as well, with five teams inside the top-100.
