FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE
Two Gaels put up double-doubles on Thursday night for Gaels basketball, with Madeline Holland and Matthias Tass each having great nights. Holland recorded her third double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and adding 11 rebounds, while Tass tied a career-best with 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. For Holland, it is the first time she has recorded at least three double-doubles in a season.
2. READY TO RUN
Saint Mary's Track returns to action on Saturday at the first of two Cal All-Comers meets in Berkeley. Last time we saw the Gaels, Rayna Stanziano was competing in the NCAA West Prelims in the 1500m, where she became the first female Gael to reach the NCAA West Prelims. In the fall, the Gaels set program records for best finishes at the NCAA West Regionals in cross country, boding well for their prospects this spring.
3. SLO IT DOWN
Saint Mary's Men's Tennis will seek their first win of the 2022 season on Saturday when they head down to San Luis Obispo to take on Cal Poly. On Tuesday, the Gaels dropped a match to No. 25 UCLA but were able to take down one of their doubles pairings thanks to Diego Jarry and Carlos Ramos Membrives, who scored a victory over the Bruins. Last season, Cal Poly won the Big West title for the first time since 2013 in what should be another great non-conference test for the Gaels.
4. HILLTOP MADNESS
Saint Mary's Men's Basketball erased a 23-point deficit on Thursday night at San Francisco to win a thriller by the final score of 72-70. The 23-point comeback win is tied for the third-largest in the NCAA this season. At one point in the game, the Gaels had just a 1.5% chance of coming back to win, but in doing so, they moved up to second place in the WCC standings.
5. DUCAS DOMINATING
On the heels of the best stretch of his collegiate career, Alex Ducas was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for the first time. Ducas averaged 19.5 points per game last week, including 22-points in the Gaels win over Loyola Marymount last Saturday. Ducas has scored at least 10 points in six-straight games, the longest stretch in his SMC career.
