FRIDAY FIVE – February 18

FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.

1. PLAY BALL
Saint Mary's Baseball begins the 2022 season this weekend with a three-game series against UC Davis, including their home opener on Sunday at Louis Guisto Field. The Gaels will have five home games in the first two weeks of the season, including a four-game series to close out February against Northern Colorado. Christopher Campos was named preseason All-WCC to go along with his preseason All-America selection.

2. DRAMATIC GAELS
Saint Mary's Softball capped off a wild first weekend of the season by recording two extra inning wins. First, the Gaels won their season opener 2-1 in eight innings against Montana thanks to a go-ahead triple from Marissa Nishihara in the eighth. Then on Sunday against San Jose State, Claudia Kirchner recorded her first-ever walk-off with a game-winning single in extras against the Spartans.

3. REBOUNDING AND SHOOTING
Two things that Saint Mary's Women's Basketball does very well is rebounding and shooting the three-ball. The Gaels rank inside the upper fourth nationally in rebounding and three-point shooting. Ali Bamberger is one of the leading rebounders in the nation, ranking second in the conference in rebounds per game, while Taycee Wedin is inside the top-15 in the NCAA in three-pointers made and in three-point field goal percentage.

4. OUR HOUSE
Saint Mary's Men's Basketball defended its home court on Thursday night by beating the San Francisco Dons 69-64. The Gaels sweep the season series against USF and retain second-place in the WCC standings with the win. Saint Mary's has now won 16-straight home games, which is tied for the third-longest home winning streak in program history.

5. KUHSE'S CLUB
Tommy Kuhse joined an exclusive club on Thursday night by scoring his 1,000th career point in a Gael uniform, making him just the 31st player to do so. It becomes even more rarified air when you consider his assist total. Kuhse is just the fourth player in SMC history to record at least 1,000 points and 400 assists, joining Matthew Dellavedova, Emmett Naar, and Mickey McConnell.
