WBB | Santa Clara and Pacific Up Next for Gaels

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's Women's Basketball continues a busy stretch with another make-up game scheduled this coming Monday along with the usual conference-play pattern of games on Thursday and Saturday. SMC will also celebrate Girls and Women in Sports Day on Thursday, honoring the women's athletics teams at Saint Mary's and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
The Gaels will host Santa Clara on Thursday, visit Pacific in Stockton on Saturday, and then go to Santa Clara on Monday to play a rescheduled game that was slated to be their WCC opener back on December 30 before being postponed due to health and safety protocols.
Senior Taycee Wedin is just one three pointer away from sole possession of the program's career record for three pointers as she is currently tied with Jontelle Smith's record of 268 threes.

LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels lost to 70-65 in overtime at Pepperdine on Monday night, dropping them to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in WCC play. The game was a rescheduled contest against the Waves that was originally supposed to take place on New Year's Day, and concluded a stretch of three games in five days for SMC.
Dalton finished with a team-high 16 points and four assists to go along with eight boards. Holland and Mastora each finish with 12 points, and Wedin had 10. Bamberger led all rebounders with 13.

ABOUT SANTA CLARA
Last season the Broncos finished 14-11 overall and 9-8 in the West Coast Conference, earning the fourth seed in the conference tournament and advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2016. They accomplished all of this despite their first eight games on the road and playing the majority of their home games in Santa Cruz, Calif. due to COVID.
The Broncos return top scorers Lindsey VanAllen and Merle Wiehl. Wiehl was named Preseason All-West Coast Conference in a poll of the league's 10 head coaches. Wiehl finished second on the team in scoring a season ago with 11.6 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. She knocked down a team-best 45 3-pointers while shooting 44.6-percent from beyond the arc, also tops on the team. She was also led the Broncos in shooting percentage overall with a mark of 52.9-percent.
The Broncos are averaging 69.2 points per game this year, third in the West Coast Conference, while shooting 41.2-percent from the field and 32.2-percent from beyond the arc. Defensively, they have allowed 63.5 ppg while forcing 15.4 turnovers per contest. Their plus-7.8 rebounding margin is second in the conference.
VanAllen leads the team and is second in the WCC in scoring with 18.4 ppg. Wiehl leads with 7.1 rpg, good for fourth in the WCC, and scores 11.8 ppg. Ashley Hiraki is scoring 8.9 ppg with a team-best 3.6 apg and adds 4.3 rpg. Lana Hollingsworth scores 8.0 ppg with 4.6 rpg as well.
ABOUT PACIFIC
Elizabeth Elliot was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this season and showed why when she scored a team-high 18 points with six boards in their defeat of Santa Clara on January 31.
Anaya James has won the WCC Freshman of The Week Award five times this season for the youthful Tigers, as she leads the team in at 14.4 points per game and Elliot is right behind her at 12.9 ppg.
