FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. START SWEEPING
Saint Mary's Baseball began the 2022 season by sweeping UC Davis in a three-game series last weekend. It marks the first time the Gaels have swept the season-opener series since 2019. The Gaels offense helped in bunches right out of the gate, hitting .308 as a team in the first series and scoring 24 runs, including an 11-run outburst against the Aggies in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
2. ALOHA, GAELS!
Saint Mary's Beach Volleyball begins the 2022 season this weekend as they are in tournament play in Waikiki, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Gaels will play four games over two days, and all four games will be against teams that are ranked inside the top-10 in the AVCA. Saint Mary's begins the beach season receiving votes in the preseason poll, one of three WCC teams to be featured in the opening poll of the year.
3. BAY AREA BOUND
After playing two games in the Bay Area this week, Saint Mary's Softball has tournament play this weekend in the South Bay. The Gaels will play two games against Utah State on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Santa Clara, and then play once more against San Jose State at the home of the Spartans on Sunday afternoon. This marks the end of play for the Gaels in February, as they will head to Colorado to begin March.
4. WEDIN: WCC'S BEST
On Thursday night, Taycee Wedin etched her mark in the West Coast Conference record book by setting the conference record for most three-pointers made in a career with 299. She did so with less than two minutes remaining in a win over Pacific, hitting her sixth triple of the night, tying a career-best that she has set on numerous occasions. With one game remaining in the regular season and the WCC Tournament left to go, she will aim to become the first player in conference history with 300 three-pointers in a career.
5. SEASON FINALE
No. 23 Saint Mary's Men's Basketball welcomes in top-ranked Gonzaga on Saturday night for Senior Night and the regular season finale. A lot is on the line for Saint Mary's, as they aim to have the first undefeated season at home in program history. Gonzaga currently owns the longest road winning streak in the country. Saint Mary's will also honor their five seniors in their final home game inside University Credit Union Pavilion.
