FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. DESOUZA DOES IT ALL
Jaden DeSouza made history earlier this week when she became the first Gael to compete in the heptathlon. The freshman began her quest at program lore at the Bryan Clay Invite in Asuza by starting with the 100 hurdles, and finishing off with the 800m run. DeSouza was one of seven female Gael to run at the Bryan Clay Invite, with the rest of the Gaels competing in San Francisco on Saturday.
2. STRIKEOUT CANCER
Saint Mary's Softball hosts Loyola Marymount in a three-game series on Friday and Saturday at Cottrell Field. The Gaels will be honoring those with cancer during Saturday's game with their STRIKEOUT CANCER initiative. Fans can make a donation by clicking on the link HERE, or by visiting the team's Instagram page.
3. TALKIN' TENNIS
Both tennis programs take on Portland and Gonzaga this weekend, with women's tennis hosting both WCC programs at Korth Tennis Courts. On the women's side, the Gaels have yet to lose a match at home this season, and Saturday's 11 am start against Gonzaga will serve as Senior Day. On the men's side, Saint Mary's aims for their first road win of the season since March 11.
4. NOTHIN' BUT NAPIER
Gavin Napier is on a tear as he leads Gaels baseball into their third weekend of WCC play in the month of April. This past week, Napier hit .412 and slugged .647 as the Gaels won a conference series over Pepperdine, driving in five runs and scoring eight times. Napier also blasted his first collegiate home run in Friday's 11-1 over Pepperdine. In a breakout sophomore campaign, Napier is hitting .355 while leading the Gaels with 29 runs scored.
5. SENIOR SPECIAL
The final home beach matches of the season take place on Wednesday and Thursday for Saint Mary's beach volleyball, with the Gaels hosting Santa Clara and San Francisco. Saint Mary's will honor their outstanding senior class during Thursday's match, as they play their final home match of 2022. Among the top seniors on this year's team are former All-WCC standouts Jennifer "Boo" Laird, Chandler Cowell, and Jasmin Suarez.
