FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. OUR TIME IN OJAI
Saint Mary's Women's Tennis will embark on the West Coast Conference Championship beginning on Thursday, April 28. The Gaels will enter as one of the hottest teams in the field, having won their last three matches entering the final weekend of the regular season. Mariia Kozyreva figures to be one of the leaders for SMC, ranked 44th in the country and fourth in the West Coast Conference.
2. CHAMPIONSHIP CLUBS
The West Coast Conference Championship returns for Saint Mary's Golf next weekend, beginning on Thursday, April 28 at Reflection Bay in Henderson, Nevada. Last year, the Gaels made a strong run after opening eighth after the first round, climbing up to fourth place overall, with Ethan Ashbrook finishing third overall. Speaking of third place, Christian Bressum finished third at the Rutherford Intercollegiate last weekend, giving him loads of momentum heading into the WCC Championship.
3. BEACHIN' IN SOCAL
The West Coast Conference Championship takes place in Santa Monica next weekend as the Gaels project to enter the tournament as the number-three seed. Saint Mary's has just one loss to every team in the field that will enter as a lower seed, but the Gaels have not beaten either of the top two seeds: Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine. Last season, Saint Mary's finished third place in last year's installment of the tournament.
4. WIRA ON THE WATER
One of the two final meets of the year for Saint Mary's rowing takes place next weekend at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship. The Gaels will race for the third time on Lake Natoma, and come into this championship with some momentum, after their second varsity eight boat beat Portland in Vancouver last weekend.
5. GAELS vs. TOP DAWGS
A big weekend of baseball arrives at Louis Guisto Field as Saint Mary's hosts Gonzaga in a pivotal three-game series. Gonzaga is ranked inside the top-15 across multiple baseball polls, and leads the West Coast Conference with an 11-4 conference record. Saint Mary's is six-games behind Gonzaga, but just three games out of a playoff spot with just four weekends of WCC play left in the regular season.
