FRIDAY FIVE presents five facts about Saint Mary's teams that are in action, with things to look forward to during the upcoming week.
1. BRING ON BYU
Saint Mary's Softball closes out its 2022 season this weekend with a three-game series at BYU beginning on Friday evening in Provo. For the Gaels, several notable numbers stand out, including a .438 batting average for Bry Waters over her last six games, and Sofia Earle being 20 strikeouts away from the second-most in a single season in Gaels history.
2. PORTLAND ON A PRAYER
Saint Mary's Baseball plays its final WCC series of the year this weekend at Portland, beginning their three-game set on Friday night. The Gaels are mathematically alive for a playoff spot in the conference, sitting just two games back with three left to play. All three teams they are chasing have difficult series on hand, but the Gaels need to sweep Portland to have a chance at postseason play.
3. CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE
For the fourth time this season, Saint Mary's Rowing hits the water at Lake Natoma in Folsom, this time for the West Coast Conference Championship. The Gaels finished fifth at this event last season, but they have tons of momentum after fast times posted at the WIRA Championship two weeks ago. Notably, their varsity four boat finished in third place overall, while their varsity eight posted their fastest time of the year.
4. LAST CHANCE
The West Coast Last Chance Meet takes place on Sunday for Saint Mary's Track, hosted by Chabot College in Hayward. This is the last chance for Gaels to hit qualifying marks to compete in the NCAA West Prelims in Arkansas on the week of May 25. As it currently stands, Rayna Stanziano will be running at the NCAA Prelims in multiple events, and multiple other Gaels are within striking distance of joining her.
5. NON-CONFERENCE CLOSING
The final baseball series of the 2022 season, barring playoffs, takes place on Thursday and Friday of next week as the Gaels host CSUN in a three-game series at Louis Guisto Field. Head Coach Greg Moore used to be the head coach of the Matadors, and this will mark the first time these teams play with coach Moore at the helm of the Gaels. SMC holds a solid 14-8 record at home this season.
