PORTLAND, Ore. – The Gaels had another late rally against the Pilots on Saturday night with their second grand slam in as many days in an 8-5 loss at Portland.
Â
They scored first and last but allowed the Pilots to take advantage of their mistakes in between, as the Gaels surrendered two unearned runs, hit two batters, and threw two wild pitches.
Â
Portland never had a big, blow-it-open inning, but they would tack on one to runs at a time throughout the game. They tied the game in the second and took the lead in the fourth, going up 3-1. The Pilots scored on an error in the fourth, a two-run homer in the sixth, and took advantage of an error in the eighth with a double and a wild pitch for an 8-1 lead.
Â
Hunter Hirayama singled to start the ninth inning,
Dalton Mashore walked, and
Coleman Schmidt singled through the left side.
Javy Espinoza blasted the first pitch he saw in a lefty-lefty match up over the right field fence for his first home run of the season and the Gaels second grand slam in as many days.
Gavin Napier walked with two outs, but Pilots induced a groundout to end the game.
Â
It looked like it would be the other way around early in the game, when Napier had a single in to center with an error that allowed him to advance to second. A productive out from
Nick Mistone got him to third and a sac fly to right from
Chris Santiago got him in for a 1-0 lead.
