Another Program Record, Another Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week for Stanziano

MORAGA, Calif. — In a year that has been all about breaking personal and program records, Rayna Stanziano continues to shine on a weekly basis. After breaking another Saint Mary's record with her performance on Sunday, Stanziano has been named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week for the second time during the track season.

In a weekend that was full of PRs from the track program, Rayna Stanziano was another headliner, setting the Saint Mary' record in the 800m at the West Coast Last Chance Meet on Sunday. She won the race with her time 2:06.49, breaking her own existing record that she set earlier in the season. Prior to, and still holding true following Sunday, Stanziano now owns SMC records in the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m, all of which she set this season.

What makes this time more impressive is that it likely gives Stanziano her third NCAA qualifying mark of the season, after earning those in the 1500m and 5000m earlier in the year.

The Gaels will send Stanziano to the NCAA West Prelims, which begins on May 25 and goes through May 28, in Arkansas. Stanziano will have to decide which event she wishes to run at the Prelims, as she most likely will earn qualifying marks in three different events: the 800m, 1500m, and 5000m. Last year, Stanziano ran in the 1500m at the NCAA West Prelims and failed to advance, but will have a chance at redemption this year. In order to qualify for the Prelims, a student-athlete must rank inside the top-48 in their respective event. Should Stanziano race in the 800m or 1500m, she would compete on May 26. The 5000m is one of the last scheduled events, taking place on May 28.
