LOS ANGELES – The Saint Mary's Baseball program earned a rare feat over the past weekend, becoming the only college program to place two players in the MLB All Star Game and two players in the MLB Future's Game in the same season.
Â
Major League Baseball announced starting pitchers Corbin Burnes and Tony Gonsolin would be 2022 All Stars on Sunday, after former Gaels
Ky Bush and Ken Waldichuk were
named to the MLB Future's Game last Thursday.
Â
Burnes is the reigning Cy Young Award winner in the National League and played for the Gaels from 2014-16. The Bakersfield, Calif. native went 15-11 with a 3.65 ERA in his time with SMC, including going 8-2 with a 2.48 ERA in 2016 before being a fourth-round pick of the Brewers that year.
Â
It's the second All Star nod for the Milwaukee ace, as he has gone 7-4 with a 2.20 ERA in 17 starts this season and leads the NL in total strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings. His ERA is even lower from last season's CY Young-winning campaign (2.43), as is his WHIP (0.89) and his hits per nine innings (5.8).
Â
Gonsolin was a Gael from 2013 to 2016 and was 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA as a junior and 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA as a senior. The Dodgers took the Vacaville, Calif. native in the ninth round of the 2016 draft before he debuted with LA in 2019. Injuries have slowed his path a bit to All Star status at times during his career, despite having a career 2.38 ERA over 231 innings in the big leagues, but he is currently 11-0 with a 1.62 in 16 starts. His wins, ERA, WHIP, and hits per nine innings are all tops in the majors.
Â
Bush and Waldichuk will represent the American League roster for the 2022 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. The young lefties will play in the prospect-filled game on Saturday, July 16 at 4:00 p.m. PDT at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles as part of MLB All-Star Saturday. The All-Star Game itself will be Tuesday, July 19 with ceremonies beginning at 4:30 p.m. PDT at Dodger Stadium.
