XC | Gaels Earn Valuable Experience at Santa Clara Duel

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The Saint Mary's Women's Cross-Country team competed against the Santa Clara Broncos Friday morning, where the Gaels were bested by the Broncos 20-38. 
 
Rayna Stanziano came away with the individual title in the 6K race, but the Gaels were unable to claim the overall victory. Stanziano led the way, finishing in a time of 21:16.0. Jiana Cortero and Kaylee Barnes also finished inside the top 10 for the Gaels, claiming eighth and nineth place in times of 23:03.0 and 23:18.0.
 
Freshman Penelopea Gordon finished just outside the top 10 in 11th position in a time of 23:44.0. Her teammate Lauren Buckley finished behind her in 13th in a time a 23:56.0, a personal best for the sophomore by nearly a minute.
 
The Gaels had five more runners in the field at Bayland Park on Friday morning, including Aushmitha Grewal and Bella Gallo claiming 14th and 15th in times of 24:02.0 and 24:03.0. Trinity Santana finished in 17th in a time of 24:30.0 for the Gaels, as Elizabeth Nip and Callie Buchanan rounded out the field in 18th and 19th in times of 4:45.0 and 6:33.0 respectively.
 
Saint Mary's also competed in the 1 Mile Race, which saw two Gaels finish inside the top three. Maddie Fletcher was the quickest Gael, snatching second in a time of 5:38.0. Lotte Van Schaik rounded out the podium in third in a time of 5:47.0, with sophomore Jaden DeSouza just behind in fourth in a time of 5:48.0.
 
Four more Gaels rounded out the top 10; Kaitlin Laner, Haileu Vines, and Maddie Dwyer finishing sixth through eighth, and Natalia Nathan claiming 10th.
 
Saint Mary's, who will race the same course at Baylands Park when they compete at the Broncos Invite on October 15, were able to earn valuable experience before they return to Santa Clara in a month's time.
 
"We were able to preview the Bronco's course and get a solid race effort in. We had the majority of our new Gaels race today and it was encouraging to see their efforts" said Head Coach Marty Kinsey.
