MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball again trimmed a double-digit, halftime deficit to a two-possession game, but weren't able to come back in a 67-54 loss to San Diego on Saturday night.
Â
TAYCEE VS. THE TOREROS
The Gaels trimmed a 16-point deficit down to six in the second half behind a spectacular shooting night from
Taycee Wedin, who scored a season-high 25 points while tying her career high in three pointers made in a game with seven.
Â
Similar to Thursday's game against BYU, the score was tied in the first quarter before USD closed out the final two minutes of the frame on a 7-0 run.
Â
SMC took a 22-21 lead on a
Hannah Rapp jumper just two-and-half minutes into the second quarter, but trailed by 10 at the half with free throws and second-chance points sparking the rally for the Toreros.
Â
STILL FIGHTING
San Diego led by as many as 16 in the third, but Wedin put the team on her back, and would cut it to eight at 52-44 with 1:20 to go in the third.
Â
Another Wedin three and free throws from
Ali Bamberger and
Ellie Croco cut the deficit to six at 57-51 just three minutes into the fourth. But from there, each team would have trouble scoring and the Gaels were unable to maintain their momentum.
Â
Saint Mary's would miss their next four shots and commit two turnovers over the next five-plus minutes that each team went scoreless. San Diego finally broke the drought scoring two buckets off SMC turnovers to go back up by 10, and hit a pair of free throws to make it 63-51 USD with just 46 seconds remaining.
Â
Wedin would not let her team go away quietly, hitting her seventh three pointer of the night to cut it to nine with 28 seconds left. However, the Toreros would hit their free throws as the Gaels had to foul to stop the clock, and held on for the win.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The seven three pointers on 10 attempts for
Taycee Wedin tied the career high she set in the WBI Championship Game last March against Cleveland State. Her 25 points led all scorers and her career high of 27 points was also in a game against USD last February.
Â
Bamberger had 11 points in her return to action with four rebounds, and Rapp had five rebounds to lead the team.
