WBB | Wedin Erupts for Career high 21 Points but Gaels Fall in Spokane
2/26/2026 9:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Saint Mary's women's basketball team put together one of its more balanced offensive performances of the season against the top team in the West Coast Conference but fell 75-67 at Gonzaga Thursday night.
The Gaels went to Spokane for the last time as WCC foes as the Zags gutted out a 8-point victory. Saint Mary's (15-15, 6-11 WCC) was up for the challenge as they always are, taking a 12-4 lead midway through the first quarter and causing problems for Gonzaga (22-8, 14-3 WCC) with its defense. The Zags closed the opening quarter on a 10-0 scoring run though and never looked back as that scoring run was pushed to 20 into the start of the second quarter.
The Gaels were able to fight their way back and take a 45-44 lead in the third but Gonzaga was lights out in the fourth quarter, shooting 83% from the field while hitting four three-pointers to pull away for the 75-67 home win. Redshirt junior guard Addi Wedin popped for a career-high 21 points off the bench while Malia Latu and Abigail Shoff were the two starters in double-figures for the Gaels.
Shoff has not reached double-figures in nine straight games while Latu has gotten to double-digit points in five of her last six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's forced four turnovers in the opening period and held the Zags to a game low 26% from the field as they took an early eight-point lead. Malia Latu had seven of the Gaels' first nine points to start the game including a three-pointer to give them a 9-4 lead. Gonzaga was able to weather the storm though as they ended the quarter on a 10-0 run and were able to extend it to 20 points into the second quarter to take a 12-point lead.
Despite four three's and a 22- point second quarter for the Bulldogs, Saint Mary's stuck with it and got a layup at the buzzer from Abigail Shoff to make it a seven-point game at the half.
Saint Mary's came out and did what they needed to do in the third quarter, shooting 54% from the field and cashing in on a pair of three-pointers of their own to cut into the deficit. Addi Wedin hit a three-pointer to make it a one-point game with 2:28 left in the quarter and then the Gaels would actually take a one-point lead with 51 seconds off a jumper from Latu. Gonzaga made a layup on its final possession to take a 46-45 advantage into the fourth.
The fourth quarter has plagued the Gaels in the past but not Thursday night as they scored 22 points on 63% shooting and hit four three-pointers. Despite the efficient period, the Zags were just a little better with 29 points and just two missed field goals, shooting over 80% in the period to pull away late. Wedin hit a three to tie the game at 48 early in the quarter but the Bulldogs would seem to have answer after answer as they grew their lead to as many as ten after a three ball with 2:39 remaining.
Wedin has worked through some growing pains over the last month of the season but erupted for a career high 21 points off the bench to keep the Gaels in it. Statistically, the Gaels did a lot of good things in the game but failed to get stops when they needed them. They matched the Zags with 47% shooting on the night, shot 53% from three, were just -4 on the glass and +13 in bench points.
GAME NOTES
Saint Mary's will finish out the 2025-26 conference season in the Pacific Northwest and take on Washington State on Saturday. Tip is slated for 12 p.m. and the game can be streamed live on ESPN+.
