Paradise Island, Bahamas — In the first round of the White Sands Bahamas NCAA Invitational, Saint Mary's shot 7-under as a team and sits in fifth place following Friday's opening round.
The start of the tournament was delayed nearly four hours, after a morning storm came through the islands, dropping nearly four-inches of rain on the Ocean Club Golf Course.
Saint Mary's started the round on the tougher side of the course, the front nine, and battled through windy conditions early on. Once the rain and wind stopped, the Gaels picked up some clutch birdies down the stretch to sit in the middle of the pack of the leaderboard.
Junior Mitchell Hoey led the way shooting a 3-under par 69, including two birdies over his final two holes. Freshman Jack Jerge came on strong down the stretch with an eagle on the par 5 16th hole, finishing the round with a 2-under par 70.
The scoring was rounded out by Kristian Bressum and Connor Reis, who each shot a 1-under par 71.
"I had a lot of things working today, I hit my driver really well, but I didn't make any putts," Reis said. "This is a course where you can score on, and we are confident tomorrow we will be able to make some moves."
Playing as an individual, Jonathan Curran shot a 4-under par 68, including five birdies and only one bogey. Curran finished the round tied for sixth place as the low round for the tournament.
"That was a fun day out there today, I had a lot of things going well for me," Curran said.
The Gaels return to the course Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. (EST) shotgun start for round two of the tournament.
