WSOC | Middaugh's Two Goals Leads SMC Past Pacific

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gaels took control in the second half Saturday afternoon against Pacific with a 2-0 win, giving SMC a three-game win streak. SMC dominated the ball by having 64% of possession time throughout the game and attempting 12 shots in each half. Sydney Middaugh led SMC by scoring both of their goals for her first collegiate brace.

The Gaels came within inches of scoring in the 27th minute when Kyllie Glock fired a shot from about 25 yards out that clanged off the right post. Brianna Salvetti twice tried a long shot to catch the Tigers keeper Libby Davy too far out of the goal. The first in the 32nd minute from the near sideline that the keeper caught, and the second was straight on from a good 35 yards out that forced Davy to make a leaping punch away that forced a corner kick.

The match was scoreless at the half, but in the 71st minute, Middaugh scored the first goal of the game after she received a long pass from her teammate Briana Salvetti. Middaugh raced up the right side of the pitch, and worked her way through the box where she fired a shot with her right foot into the short side of the net. Davy got a finger on the ball, but Middaugh's shot was too powerful, allowing it to go into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 Gaels lead.

Just five minutes later, Middaugh put another one in after a long feed from freshman Emmie Ennis. Middaugh cut right, then back left, split two defenders, and shot with her left foot across to the lower right side of the net past the diving keeper.

The two goals for Middaugh were her third and fourth of the season, putting her in second on the team. Garcia's assist was her third of the season, as was the helper from Ennis, which has them tied for second on the team with Emily Jensen.

Salvetti's assist was her team-leading sixth of the year, good for third in the West Coast Conference and increased her WCC-leading point total to 26. The shutout for Poland was her 21st at Saint Mary's, putting her within two clean sheets of Natalie Swanson (1998-91) for second all time in program history.
