MORAGA, Calif. – Justin Sosa has been named the Shamrock Solutions Student-Athlete of the Week after scoring his first two collegiate goals in the Gaels wins over Pacific and San Francisco.
 
The freshman from Agoura Hills, Calif. had already made plays for his teammates this season, facilitating the ball through the midfield and registering two assists going into this past week. But this week Sosa cashed in on his first two goals at Saint Mary's to earn the award as voting on by the SMC staff.
 
Sosa got his first career goal on a corner piece against UOP. Storm Schmidt Hollensted placed the corner kick directly in front of the goal, Sosa wedged himself between defenders, and flicked the ball into the left side of the net with his left foot to tie the match at 2-2.
 
He put SMC up 2-0 in San Francisco in the 60th minute. Jack Vestberg passed to his left where Sosa was waiting, and from straight on Sosa put a right-footed shot past the diving keeper for a two-goal lead. Sosa even helped set up the first goal for the Gaels at USF, drawing a penalty that set up the free kick to put Saint Mary's up 1-0.
 
Before coming to SMC, Sosa as a three-year varsity player at Agoura High where he scored 39 goals with 17 assists in his high school career. He scored 19 goals with nine assists as a senior, was a two-time Marmonte league MVP, two-time All-Offensive Team member, and was named MVP of high school team.
 
The Gaels will wrap up the home slate and honor their seniors this Saturday at 1:00 pm against Portland.
