MORAGA, Calif. – Men's Soccer's Nick Strangio has been named the Shamrock Office Solutions Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in the Gaels' 1-0 win over No. 25 LMU.
In the 66th minute at LMU, Riley Lynch would put a corner kick to the left of the Lions goal, and the ball would be controlled by Wade Muttitt. He would battle with an LMU defender before getting the ball to Bastian Toelhoej, who would put a cross directly in front of the goal mouth inside the six-yard box.
It would end up on the foot of Strangio who had his back to the goal. But Strangio didn't let facing the wrong way stop him, as he pushed the ball into the goal with a back-footed shot, on a motion similar to pushing a bike pedal. The goal was Strangio's second of the season and it made it 1-0 SMC in the 67th minute.
Strangio also blocked a shot in the 81st minute protecting the shutout and 1-0 lead.
That lone goal of the match by the redshirt freshman helped secure the Gaels first win over a top-25 ranked team since defeating No. 16 San Diego 3-0 in 2019. It also guaranteed Saint Mary's of finishing .500 or better overall for a 10th straight season.
