WBB | Regular Season Finale This Saturday With WCC Seeding on the Line

MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's Women's Basketball will close out the regular season at home against the University of the Pacific on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

The Gaels will honor their four seniors, in Taycee Wedin, Jade Kirisome, Amy West, and Clair Steele. Pacific will bookend the WCC season for SMC as they opened conference play in Stockton, Calif. on December 17 with a 69-66 overtime win over the Tigers.

A sweep of the season series for the Gaels would push them up to the sixth seed in the conference standings giving them a first-round bye in the WCC Tournament next week. If Pacific wins on Saturday, they will retain the sixth seed and the Gaels would be the eighth seed and play on Thursday in the first round.

LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's Women's Basketball slowed down the Zags last Saturday afternoon, but Gonzaga still managed to get a 65-51 win.

It was a defensive slugfest in the first quarter, with the Gaels trailing just 9-8 by the end of it. The Bulldogs would lead 23-12 with 4:18 to go in the second, but Saint Mary's would trim it back down to six on a Leia Hanafin layup and a Taycee Wedin three. The deficit would get back to 10 with 1:11 to go in the half, but Tayla Dalton would hit a three to knock it back down to seven and SMC trailed just 27-20 at the break.

But similar to the Portland game, the No. 20 Zags would turn it on in the third. After Hannah Rapp scored to make it a five-point game Gonzaga would go on a 13-2 run to extend their lead to 40-24 with 4:39 to go in the third. The Bulldogs would lead by 11 to end the quarter and be up 20 with 4:13 to go on their way to the 14-point win.

Ali Bamberger led the team with 13 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds at five with Hannah Rapp. Taycee Wedin had 10 points and hit two more three pointers to give her 396 in her career.

The Gaels shot better than Gonzaga at 40.4% to 38.7%, but the Zags three more field goals, including two more threes, and six more free throws.
