MORAGA, Calif. – Gaels pitcher
Derik Eaquinto was named the Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week as voted on by the SMC staff after another dominant performance this week.
Â
The Orem, Utah native pitched like an ace for the third straight game in eight innings of work, allowing just four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Eaquinto kept Xavier scoreless through 7.2 innings before allowing a solo home run to the short porch in right, where it is just 304 feet down the right field line in Joseph P. Arrenivar Field on the campus of Pittsburg High. He got a fly out to shallow right from the next batter to complete his day after 109 pitches and to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Â
The transfer from Salt Lake Community College didn't allow multiple hits in any inning during his outing. He reached back for a little extra with runners on the corners in the top of the seventh for an inning-ending strikeout for his highest readings on the radar gun.
Â
Eaquinto has a 2.10 ERA on the season in four starts. It was third-straight win and quality start after taking a no decision on opening day. He has walked just six batters this season to 27 strikeouts in 25.2 innings of work.
Â
The Gaels play at San Jose State this Wednesday before beginning WCC play at home this weekend versus Santa Clara.
