HOUSTON – Taycee Wedin of the Saint Mary's Women's Basketball team has been selected to participate in the State Farm, College Slam 3-Point Championships, becoming the first Gael ever to compete in the event.
The competition will take place at the Hoops House, located at the Bayou Music Center in downtown Houston on Thursday, March 30 at 4:30 p.m. PDT. The event will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
"I am feeling so excited and thankful to be invited to the College Slam 3-Point Contest," Wedin said after receiving her invitation. "I am really looking forward to being able to compete with the best shooters in the country and to be in such a cool environment. I also want to thank everyone who created the promotional, highlight videos of me and everyone on social media who supported me."
Wedin is one of the top three-point shooters NCAA Women's Basketball history, becoming one of just 13 players all time – and three active – to make over 400 three pointers in their career. She is SMC's and the WCC's all-time leader in career threes made (407) and in a season (106).
Milwaukie, Ore. native finished her Saint Mary's career with 1,740 points, putting her fifth all time in program history and just two points behind fourth-place Cheree Tappin. Her 143 games played and 3,986 minutes logged are second all-time in program history behind her former teammate Madeline Holland. Her 42% career three-point percentage is second all-time in program history, and is the best of any player with over 200 attempts at Saint Mary's.
Wedin remains the program's all-time leader in career free-throw percentage at 87.2%, and this season she was named to the WCC All-Academic Team with a 3.733 GPA. The graduate student was also named a Wooden Citizenship Cup Finalist in December for her community work with Team Impact in their fellowship program.
Each year, 24 of the nation's elite men's and women's college basketball players compete for slam dunk and 3-point shooting bragging rights. The night features the King's Hawaiian Slam Dunk Championship, the TaxAct Men's 3-Point Championship, the Women's 3-Point Shooting Championship and the Applebee's Team Shootout. The winners of the Men's and Women's 3-Point Championships will then compete in the Battle of the Champions.
Since the event's inception, several of the top players in college basketball have competed in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships before moving on to the professional ranks, including Cappie Pondexter, Katie Gearlds, Kristi Toliver, Odyssey Sims, Tiffany Hayes, Tiffany Mitchell and Ariel Atkins.
